Electricity's journey from the producer to the power socket is complex. The electrical energy passes long distances and through various stages before it is finally transformed to the 230 volts used by the consumer.
The transmission grid is the link between production and consumption. Therefore it plays a key role in the supply of electricity. Keeping the transmission system stable, safe and secure takes seamlessly operating infrastructure, continuous management of electricity flows and close cooperation with a wide variety of partners in Switzerland and Europe.
The heart of the transmission system, the Swissgrid grid control room, is located in Aarau. The operators monitor the grid around the clock and ensure that electricity is transported safely, securely and without interruption.

Information about guided tours in Aarau
- Every guided tour is free of charge
- Since Swissgrid operates a critical infrastructure, access to the Swissgrid building in Aarau involves heightened security requirements. An officially valid form of identification is required to register and visit the facility. Registration for entry to the Swissgrid building may take some time.

Guided tours for groups
Appointments for groups can be booked from Monday to Friday, depending on availability (see available dates in the calendar below).
- Guided tours to start no earlier than 8 a.m. and no later than 4 p.m.
- They last around 1.5 hours
- Guided tours are carried out for groups of 10 or more people. The size of the group is limited to a maximum of 15 people.

- For individuals, Swissgrid offers the «Meet Swissgrid» series of events on the following evenings:

- Duration of event: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- The event will be held if 15 or more individuals register
- The event will be in German
Guided tours on the subject of underground cabling in Bözberg
The final stage of the voltage increase to 380 kilovolts between Beznau and Birr includes a first for Swissgrid: at «Gäbihübel» in the Bözberg/Riniken region, Swissgrid is laying a 1.3 kilometre high-voltage cable underground. What are the opportunities and challenges of underground cabling and overhead lines in the extra-high-voltage grid? Swissgrid has set up a visitor centre in Bözberg to discuss this issue with the interested public.
- Every tour is free of charge
- The tour lasts around 1.5 hours
- The tour will take place if 5 or more individuals register. The group size is limited to a maximum of 18 people.
- The tour is conducted in German
